I’m currently at one of my favorite places in the world, Nina’s Coffee Cafe in St. Paul on the corner of Selby and Western. Nina’s is pretty unique in that it owes a touch of gratitude to writers for its critical first year of existence. Nina’s was the gathering point for the kick off party for NaNoWriMo and over the years, especially as NaNo grew, it became the focal point during the month of November. Oh sure, it also became a good place for college students to study, for neighborhood groups to meet and they make a pretty good latte as well as some tasty food items. Still, I still like to think that writers had a hand in its success.
This place also help rekindle my love for writing and putting word to paper (or screen, as it were). It’s changed a bit, mostly becoming a hub of activity during time when I remember it to be more of a dead period. Take this time as I write, a early Monday evening on no particular special day. When I arrived, I had a hard time trying to find a place to sit, not to mention somewhere which also had easily accessible plug-ins. There’s something about this place which carries a bohemian mystique and is very attractive to people I tend to like.
When I’m in the Twin Cities and I don’t know where to spend my time, I come here and feel welcome. There’s a lot of places I could go in the Cities, there’s a lot of places that have good food and some of them can make some decent lattes as well, but Nina’s feels comfortable, like an old favorite sweater.
